Top 5 reasons to attend the Festival of Learning

If you haven’t already planned your Saturday around the Festival of Learning, I’m here to convince you to do just that. In no particular order, here are the top five reasons to head on over to the Branch Park Pavilion at Mueller between 10am and 1pm on March 1st.

1. It’s free! Enough said.

2. You can combine your festival visit with breakfast or lunch nearby. Our event is happening at the beautiful Branch Park Pavilion at Mueller, which is surrounded by local eateries along Aldrich Street, like Kerbey Lane Cafe, Chuy’s, Honest Mary’s, sweetgreen, Rebel Cheese, Marufuku Ramen, Veracruz, Nautical Bowls, Dish Society, Bao’d Up, Colleen’s Kitchen, and more.

3. The weather is going to be fabulous. The KXAN forecast says mid-70s and partly cloudy.

4. It’s going to be a ton of fun! The schools and other organizations participating in the festival will be offering a huge array of activities for all ages: cardboard boat building, hands-on electrical math, a flood rescue challenge using spaghetti and gumdrops, haiku, blackout poetry, a nature museum, mini-journal decorating, doodle art, sensory sand experiences, pressed-flower bookmark making, logic puzzles, dice games, and a few surprises. If your kids (or you!) need to run around, there’s a public park and playground right next to the Pavilion (and see #3, above).

5. You just might find the right fit for your kid. Among the 40+ participating programs are high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, preschools, and programs that serve a combination of these levels—or all of them. You can also learn about organizations that work with young adults, parents, and caregivers. The educators you’ll meet at the festival represent a diverse array of educational philosophies and curricula, including Montessori, Waldorf, International Baccalaureate, Reggio Emilia, Sudbury, Charlotte Mason, Acton, and many eclectic approaches to teaching and learning. While most are small independent private schools, some free public charter schools will be there, too. In addition, you’ll find after-school enrichment programs, summer camps, and learning support services. See a full list of all participating programs here on the official festival webpage.

Convinced? Let us know you’re coming and share the event with friends on the Facebook Event page, and click over to the discussion section to scroll through all the updates on what you can expect to see, hear, touch, and do at each booth. You can also find lots of recent posts about the festival on our Instagram, including a little video featuring yours truly, created by Alt Ed Austin’s talented teen intern, Sam Coggin.

See you at the festival!

The Festival of Learning is back!

After taking a few years off from organizing community education events, I couldn’t be prouder to let you know that the Festival of Learning is back—bigger and better than ever! On Saturday, February 24, more than 30 innovative schools and educational programs are taking over the beautiful space of the Branch Park Pavilion at Mueller.

This means that, rain or shine, families will be able to visit with educators and students, play games, try new arts and crafts, and learn more about the growing alternative education community in Austin. It all happens from 10am to 1pm, and you can find the details, including all the participating schools, on the Alt Ed Austin website.

The Festival has always been a fun gathering of amazing local educators who want to share their passion for learning. But this year feels special because we’ve been able to expand the number of participants and guests we can host in the fantastic space at Mueller. Parents and kids of all ages will be able to talk to school representatives—including students—and look at cool projects they’ve created. Hands-on experiences will include art projects, code wheels and puzzle boxes, magnet science, knife skills and kitchen hacks, bookmaking, wildflower seed crafts, and much more.

For example, Marie from Tigerlily Preschool offered us a preview of what she’s got in store for little visitors to the Festival: “At Tigerlily children express their own ideas through paint, clay, building, collage, mud making, dance, and drawing. Our table at the festival honors this last medium, drawing, as a powerful tool for young children. Come join our community doodle!

For older learners, Amy from Headwaters School said they will be sharing “an interactive Identity Board where attendees can use yarn to signify different parts of their identities on a large labeled peg board.” You’ll have to come to the Festival if you want to discover exactly what that mysterious project is all about!

And for those in-between ages and everyone else, Pascal from Bake Austin and Ken from Austin School for the Driven are teaming up to teach basic knife skills (with cut-proof gloves provided!) along with some handy kitchen hacks.

Our goal this year is to give learners of all ages a chance to discover the wealth of opportunities available in Austin’s creative, learner-centered schools, as well as beyond-school programs. The open setting at Branch Park Pavilion allows everyone to move from booth to booth easily to chat, share ideas, and take part in all the activities. And our new location right in the heart of the Mueller business district makes it easy to stop for lunch or a snack before the Festival and burn off some energy at the playground afterward.

Please take a look at our Festival of Learning webpage or Facebook event page for all the information you need about how to get there and where to park, as well as ways to share the details with friends and family. We hope to see you there!

And here’s a short and sweet promo video created in one day by the Marketing Immersive students at the Academy of Thought and Industry, featuring some scenes from alt ed programs here in Austin:

Rest assured, the show will go on rain or shine, as we’ll be protected under that big ol’ roof. And don’t go away hungry or thirsty; there’s plenty to eat and drink right across the parking lot at the Mueller Trailer Eats food park.

When you arrive on Saturday, look for me at the Alt Ed Austin booth, front and center. I'd be happy to answer your questions, help you find the programs of most interest to your family, and guide your kids to fun, hands-on activities they’ll love. I look forward to meeting you and helping you find the right fit for your kid—or you!
